Mario Aieta practices in the area of litigation and advisory services, focusing his practice on intellectual property, media law, cybersecurity, publicity rights, privacy, and financial services. For over 30 years, Mr. Aieta has represented visual artists, musicians, writers, inventors, athletes, and other content creators in disputes and negotiations relating to authorship, originality, ownership, and usage rights. He has represented online and traditional publishers, advertising agencies, and brand owners in a wide range of copyright, trademark, unfair competition, and First Amendment disputes. Mr. Aieta has also represented numerous Fortune 100 companies, including JPMorgan Chase, Ford, General Electric, and Prudential in complex litigation in court, before administrative agencies, and in arbitration around the country. He is admitted to practice in New York and in Ohio and has been identified as a Super Lawyer in intellectual property disputes every year since 2014. Mr. Aieta was a founding partner of a successful IP development company and is a named inventor on seven granted U.S. Patents.

Mr. Aieta is a 1984 graduate of New York University School of Law and a cum laude graduate of Harvard University.

Representative Matters

  • Defended the purchaser of a broker-dealer/investment adviser in New York Supreme Court and in arbitration on a wide range of claims, including breach of contract and wage-and-hour laws, wrongful termination, discrimination, retaliation and false-light invasion of privacy. The arbitrator dismissed all of the seller’s claims and awarded the purchaser $19 million in compensatory damages and other remedies, including $1.6 million in attorney’s fees and forum costs.

  • Successfully represented two professional sports agents before the trial court, the Appellate Division, and the New York Court of Appeals to recover fees from a famous athlete. Revis v. Schwartz, 38 N.Y.3d 939 (2022)

  • Successfully represented an NYSE-listed maker of networking equipment in cross-border litigation against a supplier of components.

  • Successfully represented a national architectural/design firm against trade secret claims asserted by a provider of web-based services.

  • Represented an international healthcare research and consulting company in successfully terminating contractual obligations impacted by COVID restrictions.

  • Represented a private investment bank in the acquisition of a well-known women’s apparel maker.

  • Represented a major content distributor in an enforcement campaign involving thousands of cases in three federal districts.

  • Represented a major content provider in numerous cases against commercial copyright infringers.

  • Obtained the dismissal of 42 separate complaints filed by a tax shelter promoter against individual investors.

  • Represented a national provider of high tech security services in asserting patent and unfair competition claims against various competitors.
