Joseph A. Powers has more than two decades of experience handling patent litigation and prosecution matters on behalf of some of the world’s largest technology innovators, as well as for individual inventors and startup companies. Most recently, Joe was part of a Duane Morris trial team that secured a complete win (on non-infringement) in a multi-billion dollar patent infringement trial in the Eastern District of Virginia’s rocket docket.

While Joe has deep knowledge of his clients’ technologies, he understands that his audiences may not. In infringement proceedings, Joe leads the technical team and is adept at clearly articulating complex technologies and strategies in digestible form to his audience, whether it be the Court, his client or opposing counsel.

Joe regularly appears before federal courts throughout the country, including in Texas, Delaware and California, handling claim construction, summary judgment and other proceedings involving technology. As part of his litigation practice, Joe works with the firm’s nationally recognized Patent and Trademark Appeal Board (PTAB) and Inter Partes Review practices has successfully challenged dozens of asserted patents.

In addition to his litigation practice, Joe is a registered patent attorney and has practiced before the United States Patent and Trademark Office for more than two decades. As part of his prosecution and counseling practice, Joe provides strategic guidance to his clients on the development and commercialization of their products and services, and the implementation of patent and licensing strategies in the U.S. and abroad for protecting their valuable intellectual property.

Joe is a 1999 magna cum laude graduate of Villanova University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and elected to the Order of the Coif, and is a summa cum laude graduate of Villanova University, where he received a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
