PHILADELPHIA, February 22, 2023—Duane Morris LLP has appointed partners Vijay Bange in London and Owen Newman in Chicago as the co-chairs of the International Arbitration Division within its global Trial Practice Group.

“Duane Morris offers renowned litigation capabilities, and this is a hallmark of our firm. The global reach and growth momentum of our international arbitration practice has reached a critical mass, and we are thrilled to bring Vijay and Owen to our leadership ranks to lead the division and to continue with the growth and ongoing expansion of this practice area for the firm. Cross-border disputes and arbitration are a core area of further expansion and investment to serve our global client base, and Vijay and Owen have the energy and drive to write the next chapter,” said Matthew A. Taylor, Duane Morris Chairman and CEO. “We have a strong geographic footprint of international offices to support the ongoing work of our International Arbitration Division and excellent teams in the arbitration hubs of London and Singapore.”

Duane Morris has extensive experience in cross-border disputes and international arbitrations of all types and offers an industry-agnostic approach to arbitration matters.

Continued Taylor, “Over the past several years we have added talented lateral partners with deep experience in complex disputes across multinational borders, expanding our experience into Africa and Latin America. Owen and Vijay have both delivered results that their respective global clients have found favorable while demonstrating a strong entrepreneurial flair and a desire to grow a key part of our law firm. I’m excited for them and what is ahead for our International Arbitration Division.”

Vijay K. Bange is a London-based partner with extensive experience in dealing with cross-border construction, engineering and energy disputes. His experience includes advising in relation to large, international infrastructure projects, including numerous airports, road, harbor and waste-to-energy projects. He undertakes a diverse range of work, including noncontentious, advisory steer throughout project life cycle, dispute avoidance strategy and contractual interpretation. Further, he is a keen advocate of innovative ADR approaches.

Bange is regularly involved with complex litigation and arbitrations, both domestic and cross-border. This includes cybersecurity matters in the construction, engineering and energy sectors; freezing and tracing assets, including obtaining domestic and worldwide freezing injunctions, Norwich Pharmacal and Bankers Trust orders; international asset recovery; virtual currencies and financial crime and cybersecurity matters, including incident response; FOREX scams; business email compromise fraud; and recovering misappropriated assets from crypto wallets and cryptocurrency exchanges in various jurisdictions.

Bange is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (diploma in International Arbitration ACIArb) and a member of the Society of Construction Law and TeCSA. He is familiar with the plethora of institutional arbitral rules. He has consistently been acknowledged as a legal expert in the field of construction and engineering law in the Legal 500 and Chambers UK. He is fluent in Punjabi and Hindi.

Owen Newman is a Chicago-based litigation partner focusing on complex, multijurisdictional disputes. Newman advises clients in high-value disputes with particular focus on large-scale engineering and construction projects in the power generation and oil-and-gas sectors. He has represented clients in disputes around the world, including Africa, Asia, North America and the Middle East, and acted as counsel under the rules of the ICC, LCIA, SIAC, UNCITRAL, AAA and SCC, as well as ad hoc arbitrations in India and Saudi Arabia.

In addition to formal dispute resolution, Newman’s construction and engineering clients value his previous experience as a project manager and regional director for a global engineering and construction contractor. This “dirty boots” experience allows Newman to partner with clients and their project teams to provide practical commercial, claims and risk management support for some of his client’s most financially and reputationally significant projects.

Newman is a 2003 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Law and a graduate of Luther College.
